One of the most beautiful aspects of education is watching students find their voices and take ownership of their learning experiences. The Arrowsmith Program not only helps students with their cognitive development but also encourages them to engage in meaningful conversations about their lives and the world around them. Lydia’s story, as shared by Aaron Lee, is a perfect example of this.
Aaron Lee: Lydia’s Courageous Contribution
During a recent campus forum, Lydia, a student who rarely speaks in group settings, made a powerful statement that left a lasting impression on everyone in the room:
"Last night during campus forum we were discussing equality as it relates to race, gender, ethnicity, etc. The topic of equality for students with learning differences came up in the meeting with several students expressing concerns about budget cuts in resources from the government. The cutting of art and music was also a topic and what could we as students do to be the change they want to see in the world.
Lydia, who never speaks in any of these sessions, raised her hand and stated the following: ‘I have a board in my room and I write things on my board and one of the things I wrote on my board is "Nice words can change someone's day."’
The entire room went silent and staff acknowledged that Lydia embodies that very quote and we're glad to have her at Brehm. The amazing thing that all the staff left with was twofold: she took a healthy risk by speaking in campus forum and secondly, she was able to follow the entire conversation, then add some very valuable information to a conversation involving 50+ people!"
Lydia’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of creating spaces where all voices can be heard. Her courage to speak up and share her thoughts is a testament to the supportive and empowering environment we strive to cultivate at Brehm.
