Introduction to Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
As a School Social Worker, it is a major role of our job to work with our students on their mental, social, and emotional health. One of the earliest interventions that has been shown to be effective is Social Emotional Learning (SEL), which has been a growing focus in education especially after the pandemic. Young people have missed out on critical social development skills/ milestones and the effects are being seen in higher education levels as those students get older.
Impact of SEL on Special Education Students
In particular, students in special education have been more affected by this as Social-Emotional Learning is a critical piece of education that teaches the nuances of social behaviors that can be tricky to understand for neurodiverse people. This allows students the opportunity to ask questions, practice the strategies, and build community in a safe and shared environment among peers.
Core Components of SEL at Brehm
In the context of special education, SEL is the teaching of social skills and strategies such as regulating emotions, creating self-identity, building relationships, and making safe/ healthy choices. At Brehm, we utilize the Collaboration of Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework that focuses on the five core competencies:
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision Making.
Benefits of School-Wide SEL Programs
There are some key benefits to having a school-wide SEL class, especially with students with learning differences and disabilities. SEL has positive impacts on the students, the school, and the overall community as research has shown there is increased academic performance, increased social-emotional competence, decreased suspensions and expulsion rates, reduced bullying behaviors, decreased rates of student-reported drug/alcohol abuse, and overall increase in positive school culture and safety.
SEL Implementation at Brehm
Social Emotional Learning has several implementations here at Brehm; first is we have a school-wide SEL curriculum that all students attend and participate in. Second is our faculty and staff model and exemplifying the socially appropriate behaviors to our students and educating them in the moment during class time. Third is our positive reward program for students that demonstrate the 5 core competencies and being engaged in the program. Fourth part is the students in the dorms are participating in Dorm Challenges where students collaborate and complete a challenge that is focused around a SEL theme of the month.
Personal Experience with SEL's Impact
From my personal experience working with our students, I have seen the increased understanding, practice, and value of the core competencies. The students are able to make the connections from the SEL lesson to their actual real-life experiences and that helps them navigate their life in a more safe and effective manner.
Conclusion: SEL's Role in Student Development at Brehm
SEL is a core part of Brehm's program and is individualized for the students to meet them where they are and grow in the areas they still need to work on, meanwhile empowering them to make their own decisions.
